This was the first major project which I did in my Bachelor of Industrial Design. The project introduced me to many different design methods for exploration and problem refinement, but also towards validating prototypes and using practices such as the double diamond of design, to inform my decisions. I used methods such as pressure cooking, user interviews and surveys, writing design briefs, Sketching ideas with 5-4-5 (five ideas, four people, five minutes) and grouping them with posits. I even used what we called the Bowie-technique, where we made multiple design briefs surrounding the same problem and started replacing specific words such as the target groups and goals. This way we had a lot of different angles to approach the same problem: children spending too much time indoors. Next to these methods we made use of body-storming and explored shape prototypes to get a feeling of the tangible domain for the project.

Next to my general developed understanding about the design process, I started working on making the shape prototypes. I tried to explore what it would be like if a child was to use the prototype outside and what shape would be the most useful. To place myself and my team mates in the role of the child, I made a scenario. This scenario showed more functionalities of the design. We noticed that simplicity is very important and for the final design we reduced the functions quite a lot. This gave the design more purpose. Next to this, I worked on developing the second version of the app, together with applying the user feedback.
